Four tips to find a STEM summer camp

Today, I followed a tweet by Danielle Lee, @DNLee5, to the hashtag #BLACKandSTEM where @ThePurplePage posed questions to get those with information on STEM summer camps to post them as a way to engage black youth in STEM. You can find the summary of her questions at #BLACKandSTEM 03/20/14.

I sent my kids to summer camps ranging from general activity to artsy to historical to science -oriented. While listing out summer camps my kids attended with their experience is not necessarily helpful due to limited geography, here are some tips on finding science summer camps near you:

1. Look into your local children’s museum list of camps. They won’t all be science oriented (unless it’s a science museum), but there are likely to be a few. Look into your local zoo or aquarium, as well.

2. Look into summer camps hosted by your local/nearby University. Most universities have summer camps that at least some are science-focused. My kids went to vet camp one year!

3. Look into your local 4-H group summer camps. Some will have a science focus.

4. Google “STEM summer camp” and your city name. You might be surprised at what you find. When I did that for my now locale, I got a link to Parentmap that already had listed out 16 STEM summer camps – and I found one that looks fantastic for my high school student.
